Making Flyers for your yard sale
- Make or buy bright colorful flyers-You can buy flyer's or make your own on your computer. (You can use Google docs to make them) and print them out yourself or at your local library. Make your flyers bright and colorful to attract as much attention as possible. Make your flyer's professional looking but fun at the same time. Don't put too much on your flyers because it will overwhelm people. The best way is to put in large letters Rummage Sale, Yard Sale, or Garage Sale, and your address in the center of the flyer. You can add items that are in your sale on the bottom or in bright colored marker around the center pointing out like a sunburst. Be sure to ask local businesses if you can post your flyers before you put them up.
Make or Buy Signs for your yard sale
You can buy signs or make your own. You will want to have a minimum of 4-6 large signs to post around the neighborhood. A good strategy is to post them on the busiest street on each side of your property, even if you have to go a few streets up to do it. Post a sign at each street pointing the way to your sale and make sure you put the address on each sign. If you feel artistic and decide to make your own sign be sure to that your sign is crisp and neat with large letters that are easy to read from a distance and be sure to put your address on your sign.
You can attach balloons or flags to your signs to attract attention. Wherever you post your signs you should attach your balloons or colorful flag to signs that you post around the neighborhood. Do not post signs or posters on telephone poles or street signs as the city will take them down or worse some cities will even fine you for doing this.
Studies show that people are more likely to go to a rummage sale that has a professional sign with colorful decorations attached to get their attention. Flags are bright, colorful, look professional and attract customers! You can place flags on your signs and at your sale. Balloons attract attention too but all too often they lose air and you will have to constantly replace them.

Setting up your yard sale
Setting up your Items-Make sure every item is clean and unbroken. Place items neatly by putting items that are for certain rooms in the house together. For example, Kitchen items with kitchen items, living room items with living room items, stereo's, tv's and electronics with same. Place items on tables so your customers do not have to bend down. Hang clothing so it can be easily seen. Put the best stuff where customers can see it from the road.
Make a box that has items for a dollar, 50 cents, 25 cents
People love to rummage through these type of boxes. Keep them close to the check out area. and place a large sign over the box.

Setting up your checkout table
Make sure you position your checkout table where you can see and greet your customers when they arrive and so they can easily find you when they are ready to check out. Have a calculator to add up purchases. Keep a notebook and pen to write down what was sold and for how much. Make sure you have at least 10-20 dollars in change handy (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills)-not having the correct change could lose you a sale or cause you to have to take less than you wanted for an item. Do not leave your checkout table unattended if there is money on the table. Carry the money on you or have someone you trust or yourself to sit at the table at all times. Keep your change handy and your cash safe. You can wear a change apron, use a mini cash register, or a locking cash box which can be easily carried or cable locked to something stationary. If you plan to set up a second hand store or have your sale long term you may wish to make a small investment in a mini cash register.
Greeting & Bargaining With your yard sale customers
Greet each customer as they arrive. Be sure to smile and say something to make them feel comfortable, like, "Hi! My name is ____ Welcome to my yard sale, feel free to look around and if you need help just let me know, I will be happy to assist you". Greeting your customers does two things, one it lets them know you noticed them and are glad they came and two if thieves come to your yard sale they will know you noticed them and are less likely to stick around. Customers like to meander around and shop, (not to be pressured) but if you can strike up a conversation with them they will usually buy something even if it isn't something they really wanted just because you are friendly and they like you.
Some people will pay whatever price is marked on an item while others prefer to barter over the price. Set your prices a little bit higher than what you actually want for them. That way if you get a customer who wants to barter you can go down a bit on the price and your customer leaves happy because they think they got a better price for the item and most likely they will go tell others about their good deal which will attract more customers to your sale.

Wear Name tags at your yard sale
You may want to consider wearing a name tag for yourself and anyone who will be helping with your sale. Name tags not only look more professional but also make it easy for your customers to locate someone to help them, and is often the topic of ice breaking conversations which can give you an opportunity to know your customer better and find out their name too. You can make name tags yourself, get the kids or Grandkids into the act, or purchase some at pretty reasonable prices.
