Fruit is good for you, tastes good and has health and medicinal benefits. According to Choosemyplate.gov most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium, calories and they have no cholesterol. Eating fruit provides your body with needed nutrients such as potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, folate (folic acid), and can reduce the chances of most chronic diseases. If you are looking for a great way to lose weight, eating fruit is a good way to do it because the fiber in fruit makes you feel full, so you will eat less. Fiber in fruit also helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels, lower the risk of heart diseases, and improves bowl function. The potassium in banana's, prunes, prune juice, dried peaches, apricots, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and orange juice can help you maintain healthy blood pressure. Eating fruit provides your body with Vitamin C which helps your body repair it's tissues to help heal cuts and wounds plus it keeps your teeth and gums healthy. Another benefit of eating fruit is that it contains folate or folic acid which helps your body create red blood cells. Pregnant women or women who plan to become pregnant can reduce the risk of neural tube defects, spina bifida, and anencephaly. During pregnancy women should eat at least 400 mcg of synthetic folic acid from foods or supplements (1).
