Some people keep mice as pets, not all mice make good pets but pet mice are not what we are talking about today. Wild mice, field mice, or house mice can become huge household pests. The mice you may encounter, scampering around your baseboard's or under your bed, usually during the fall and winter month's are usually field mice.
How to tell if you have mice:You may find holes in your walls, or nests of torn up paper's and pieces of clothing, electrical shorts. Mice can do a lot of damage to your home, carry parasites like fleas, lice, and mites, spread disease, may be rabid, and may even bite you. Documented cases of illness and death have happened to people because of mice urinating on the tops of soda cans and food. Mice will urinate everywhere they go, leaving a trail to mark their territory or to find their way back to a favorite eating or nesting spot.
How to get rid of mice
If you see one mouse in your house it is a pretty good indication that there are many more mice. The safest way to get rid of mice is to use an Ultrasonic Pest Repeller or mouse repellent such as peppermint oil.
Peppermint Oil-Mice hate it and you will love it. Peppermint oil can be sprayed around your home, yard, hen house, shed, and any place where you see evidence of mice. (Holes in walls or floors, tiny bits of torn paper or materials, holes in clothing, in the dirt around pet feed dishes, chicken coops, and livestock feeding areas).
Ultrasonic Pest Deterrents- I use Ultrasonic pest deterrents to get rid of mice and unwanted insects. At first, it seemed like they did not work because I seen more of them but within a week there were none and I haven't seen any since or signs that they have been here. I do have dogs, cats, and even baby chicks in a brooder inside my house. I do not use the Ultrasonic pest deterrent in the room with the baby chicks because I do not want to risk it but it does not appear to bother my small dogs and cats at all.
Mouse traps- I don't use mouse traps because mice will suffer a horrible death and many times it does not kill them and then you have too. Can be set with peanut butter or cheese and you probably will catch a mouse. Mouse traps can be quite inhumane as the mouse may not be killed immediately and will most likely suffer for a long period of time before dying. Usually after catching one or two mice you may encounter a very smart mouse who has learned how to spring the trap without getting caught. When this happen's it is rare for any more mice to be caught in that trap.
Glue trap's-Glue trap's are an extremely inhumane way, but will catch mice. As the mice scamper's to a piece of food in the center of the glue trap it's feet get stuck to the trap. The bad part is the mouse is still alive and there is no way to get their feet out of the glue without pulling their feet off. This leaves you with the responsibility of murdering the mouse yourself or throwing away a live mouse, leaving it to starve to death which takes a long time and is very painful.
Poison- Many mice and rat poison's are also poisonous to humans and household pets so this is not a very good option. If you use poison be sure that it is somewhere that small children or pets cannot get to it and make sure the poison is not near any food supplies. Poison's generally do not kill the mice right away and provide a slow, agonizing painful death for the mouse. Often, you will find the poisoned mouse flopping around on your floor until it dies.
