Free Bread Recipe: Hot Cross Buns
You can frost these or eat them plain. This recipe makes approx. 18 Hot cross buns.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup milk
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
2 pkgs active dry yeast
1/2 cup of warm water
3 eggs
4 cups of sifted, all purpose flour
3/4 cup currants
1 egg white
1 tsp of cold water
White frosting (optional)
Directions:
Ingredients:

1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
2 pkgs active dry yeast
1/2 cup of warm water

4 cups of sifted, all purpose flour
3/4 cup currants
1 egg white
1 tsp of cold water
White frosting (optional)
Directions:
- Scald milk, add sugar, salt, and shortening-cool to lukewarm
- Sprinkle yeast on warm water and stir
- Add eggs, yeast, and 1 cup of flour to milk mixture, beat with electric mixer-medium speed-2 minutes while occasionally scraping the bowl.
- Stir in currants
- Add enough remaining flour to make a soft doug.
- Beat well
- Place in lightly greased bowl
- Turn dough over and grease the top
- Cover and let rise until doubled (about 11/2 hours)-Punch down and let rise about 1 hour.
- Roll or pat to 1/2" thickness
- Cin in rounds with 212" butter cutter
- Shape cutouts into buns
- Place about 11/2" apart on greased baking sheets
- Cover and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour)
- With sharp knife-cut a shallow cross on top of each bun
- Brush tops with unbeaten egg white mixed with cold water
- Bake at 375 degrees F for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool on wire racks about 5 minutes
- Frost by spreading frosting into the cross with a knife or teaspoon
