Obesity in America
Obesity is killing America
The surgeon general reports that lack of activity and over eating are the number one cause of obesity and sent a letter requesting that something be done to stop it!
Statistics:
Two out of every three Americans-overweight or obese.
One out of every eight deaths is from illness that is caused by obesity or related to excessive body weight.
Reasons:
Lack of physical activity
Unhealthy eating habits
“Overall, 82 percent of our nation’s 70 million children are in very good or excellent health. Infant mortality is at an all-time low, childhood immunization is at an all-time high. Our children are less likely to smoke, and less likely to give birth as teenagers. These are important gains in pediatric health. But the bad news is that an unprecedented number of children are carrying excess body weight. That excess weight significantly increases our kids’ risk factors for a range of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and emotional and mental health problems.” (Carmona, 2007).

They are still missing a few things!
One big thing that they seem to be over-looking:
Eating healthy is more expensive and not as easily accessible as "fast food". For example, People on fixed incomes can get a hamburger and fries for two dollars and 26 cents wheareas fresh fruit such as an apple and a bottle of milk would cost four dollars and fifty cents plus the gas wasted to go get it.
There are fast food restaurants on every corner competeing with each other and even promoting their meals as nutritious. To the uninformed consumer they may actually think they are eating a nutrituous meal.
The way food is promoted and advertised can determine the food choices that children and adults make.
Certain cooking processes can eliminate the nutritional value of foods-Many of the cooking processes used to cook food actually remove the natural enzymes and vitamins that help your body digest food properly and these processes are known to remove needed nutrients. If your body does not get the right nutrients it will crave those nutrients causing you to be hungry and eat more food because your body is searching for those nutrients.
If they want to really help America get fit then they need to get the fast food places to serve healthy alternatives at an affordable competitive price with the hamburger and fries. Taking them out of business would not be good for the economy but getting them to serve nutrituous food at reasonable prices just might work. Check out this video for more information.

Obesity in America has reached a crisis point. Two out of every three Americans are overweight, one out of every three is obese. One in three are expected to have diabetes by 2050.
Minorities have been even more profoundly affected. African-Americans have a 50 per cent higher prevalence of obesity and Hispanics 25 per cent higher when compared with whites.
