How to Check the Oil in Your Vehicle
Step by step easy to understand instructions on how to change the oil in your vehicle. Watch our featured video to see how!
Before you check your oil you should make sure your vehicle is not running and has not run for at least 10 or 15 minutes so the oil can run back down otherwise you will get an incorrect measurement. Have a lint free cloth handy to wipe off the dipstick.
Locate the dipstick
There will be a "Full" marking if the oil reaches this line it is full and does not need oil
If the oil does not reach the "Full" line marking then your vehicle needs oil
Look at how the oil looks, it should be clear and clean. If the oil is dark and dirty then it needs to be changed.
You can change your oil and oil filter yourself or you can have it done at a tuneup shop or at Walmart automotive. Prices are usually pretty close to the cost of doing it yourself. See video below for demonstration on how to check your oil.
Locate the dipstick
- Pull the dipstick out and wipe it off with the lint free cloth
- Insert the dipstick back into the pipe it was in when you found it. (If the dipstick gets stuck, pull it out and turn it around) it should go right in.
