Home security is a must these days but it does not have to be a huge complicated thing where you have to hire a security company and an electrician to install your camera system. Many plug and play devices are available and some are even compatible with Alexa or Google Home. It is important to get the right cameras for your needs but just getting a few cameras may not always be the solution or it may not be enough if they are not placed correctly or if you don't get the right camera. Keeping your home and family safe has never been more affordable.
There are many more options to buy more affordable home security cameras but here are a few things you should know first. If you can afford to get security cameras that need to be installed by an electrician do it but if you can't and need some cheap home security these tips will help.
- Get a motion activated, wifi camera which does not have to be plugged in to work and if it does make sure the cord is not where someone can reach the cord and unplug it. Try to get cameras which have more than one power source. If your camera can be used plugged in and has battery back up is ideal. However, you will need to check the batteries regularly for wear or leakage. It is not uncommon for outdoor cameras such as deer cameras to end up with damaged batteries from moisture in the air and rain.
- Get a wifi camera to connect to your home internet connection and be sure to see where your internet wires enter into your home. If they are reachable from outside your home you may want to call your internet company and ask them to move them higher up where they cannot be easily accessed.
- Get a camera which has a good app for your cell phone so that you can see what your camera is seeing from where ever you are at. Be sure to read VERIFIED customer reviews for the camera and the app used for it before you make a purchase. Keep in mind that unverified customer reviews may be written by a competitor selling a similar product. Of course, negative verified product reviews may be also, but it is less likely as they would have to buy the products themselves. Make sure more than one camera can be used with the correlating camera app.
- Do not buy a camera that only has SD saving capabilities unless you have to. If someone steals your camera you won't have any way of proving who did it and will not be able to save your home security videos online. It is important that you are able to save your home security videos online because you may need them as evidence of a crime. Most career criminals know that SD cameras only save videos on the SD card. There are some new motion activated models available which will take a photo and save it to the photos on your phone or online. Some apps will allow you to pay for saving photos and videos, some will allow you to save photos but not videos online, while others do not have the option at all and only save them on the SD Card.
- Don't put your camera where someone can get behind it and steal it. Outdoor Camera placement is crucial. Put cameras high enough that someone cannot reach it and do not leave chairs, ladders, stools or other items outdoors where someone could use them to reach your camera.
- Make sure area is cleared from the camera view. In other words don't have things that someone could hide behind in your camera range.
- Have several cameras. Even if they manage to get past one or two visible cameras one of the cameras may catch the culprit.
- Use indoor cameras and outdoor cameras but make sure you buy cameras which are made for indoors inside and outdoor cameras outside as most indoor cameras cannot hold up to the weather elements.
- Use visible cameras and spy cameras or hidden cameras. Placing a visible camera will deter some burglars but not all. If a prowler can clearly see where your cameras are they can figure out a way around them which is where spy cameras or hidden cameras come into play. Use small spy cameras placed where they are not visible. Point hidden cameras toward your visible cameras so if someone tries to go around your camera or worse tries to steal your camera or disable it, your spy camera will catch them in the act.
- Try to get cameras which have audio where you can talk to and hear what is going on. There have been incidences where people who have audio security cameras have actually asked the prowler, "Hey what do you think you are doing"? and the prowler left and in several incidences they actually put back what they were trying to steal. Audio can also be helpful when watching your pets to console them from separation anxiety, check on them etc.
