Preparing to Grow a Garden
In the late winter months I like to plan what I want and need to grow to make through to the next winter. In February, I start planting seeds in seed pots so that I will have nice little plants to put in my garden. I start my compost for spring right after my last harvest in the previous fall. This makes planning the layout of where I intend to plant everything easier to figure out and gives my garden a much better chance of thriving. I do plant some things from seeds directly into the garden, like pinto beans, snap beans, lettuce, radishes and carrots. I have found that plants like watermelon, tomatoes, cantaloupe, squash and peppers need a little jump start so I start them early in seed pots. In March I plow and plant my garden. After you fertilize and plow your garden soil and have decided what you want to plant where, you will need to make rows. Rows should have at least 12-20 inches of space between them so you can easily walk between the rows for weeding, cultivating, and harvesting unless you are making a small garden where you can reach into it from the sides. If you are going to use fertilizer to make your plants grow faster it is a good idea to plow it into your garden 15 days before planting (less chance for burning your plants roots).
